Army is considered to be the most important part of defence of any country. Whereas Navy deals with protection of seashores, Air Force is responsible for Air operations, Army is responsible for ground operations. Career in any of the defence services is considered highly respectable. Indian Army was formed under British Government where most of the high ranked officers were Britishers but after Independence it became totally Indian. The importance of Indian Army is even more because of its unstable relationship with its neighbour Pakistan. Indian has had already 3 major wars with Pakistan and it was Indian Army which was responsible for the protection of the borders of our country.

The soldiers and officers in the Indian Army are responsible for protecting the land borders of the country. In case of any intrusion by the neighbouring country the army takes required action to protect the borders. Sometimes it may even take shape of a war where the soldiers have to fight for the country by putting even their lives at stakes. Apart from protecting the territorial integrity the army is also used in controlling of severe internal conflicts and disturbances and for providing relief in case of natural calamities like Earthquakes, Cyclones and Floods etc. So the basic task of an army is the protection of country against any external, internal or natural forces.
